Dame Whina Cooper ONZ DBE, born in 1895 and passing in 1994, stands as a remarkable figure in the history of Aotearoa. Her unwavering commitment to the rights of Māori, especially wahine, continues to resonate. At 79, she led the historic land march from Te Hāpua to Wellington, covering an astounding 1,100 kilometers, showcasing her immense dedication.
Whina's journey is a testament to resilience and fortitude in the face of adversity. Her belief in non-violent protest and the importance of contributing through hard work exemplifies the spirit of advocacy for those who are marginalized. She embodied the notion that genuine change arises from tireless effort and unwavering belief in one's cause.
Through my painting, I aspire to capture the essence of her strength and passion. Whina Cooper serves as a guiding light, encouraging us all to stand firm for what is right and to approach our challenges with the same determination she exemplified throughout her life. Her legacy inspires me to infuse my work with that same spirit of perseverance and advocacy.
