Ngā Kurakura Hinenuitepō is a stunning portrayal of the Aurora Australis, depicted through a captivating blend of color and emotion. The creative process began on a cold, dark night in May 2024, during one of my late-night adventures across Aotearoa. Experiencing the rare beauty of the night sky’s light display was both a privilege and a thrill.
The vibrant visuals and the phenomenon's elusive nature inspired me deeply. The Māori goddess Hinenuitepō, renowned in legends for guiding the spirits of the departed, influenced the work’s essence. With each brushstroke, I aimed to reflect the brilliance of the night sky while paying homage to its significance in Te Ao Māori.
Incorporating layers of neon not only enhances the color vibrancy in daylight but also invites viewers to a transcendent experience, drawing them into another realm where the past and present intertwine. This work stands as a tribute to both the natural beauty of New Zealand and the rich cultural narratives that inspire my art.
