Te Rā, the only original traditional Māori sail known to exist, stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage and craftsmanship of the Māori people. With an estimated age exceeding 200 years, Te Rā has traversed time and space, now residing in the British Museum.
In 2023, she embarked on a significant journey back to her whenua, the land where she was birthed by the hands of many skilled Māori artisans. This momentous occasion was marked by a private viewing organized by a ropū from Te Wānanga O Aotearoa. As we entered the room, an electric atmosphere enveloped us, filled with excitement and reverence for the powerful presence of Te Rā. Her wairua resonated within the space, reaching into depths of our being that felt long untouched.
The intricate details of her raranga, the weaving patterns, captured our collective imagination. We marveled at the stunning kereru and kaka feathers that adorned her, each piece telling a story of its own. For some, it was a unique experience to see kuri, dog fur, used in such remarkable ways, highlighting the resourcefulness of the creators. The meticulous cutting and placing of feathers prompted a flurry of ideas and discussions about their intended purposes, enriching our understanding of her significance.
As we shared kōrero, the room buzzed with the exploration of the narratives surrounding Te Rā. We pondered how she found her way to England, the processes involved in her creation, the skilled hands that crafted her, and the multitude of sails that once graced the waters of Aotearoa.
In celebration of this cultural rediscovery, a painting capturing a Ta moko artist sets the scene. He traverses the archipelago guided by his loyal kuri and the illuminating night sky, a symbol of heritage and exploration intertwined. This depiction invites us to reflect on the enduring legacy of Māori traditions, firmly rooting us in the rich tapestry of our history while we navigate the path ahead.
