Tuis are indeed a captivating symbol of Aotearoa’s vibrant wildlife, bringing life to the landscapes they inhabit. Their playful nature and melodic calls create a sense of connection to the environment that many of us cherish. As I paint these birds, I reflect on their joyful presence that seems absent from my current surroundings in North Canterbury. My efforts to plant native trees and flowers are driven by a desire to invite them back, filling my daily life with their spirited antics once again.
The Haast series reflects my recent journey through some of New Zealand's stunning yet remote areas. Traveling from Amberley to Twizel, Wanaka, and ultimately through to the breathtaking Glaciers, I was reminded of the profound beauty found in solitude. Each chilly night spent in the serenity of the Pass allowed us to embrace the changing seasons, with winter approaching and nature slowly pausing for a well-deserved rest.
Amidst snow-covered mountains, the ambiance was both calm and invigorating, with only snippets of sunshine breaking through. This journey was not just an exploration but a time to reflect and appreciate the less-frequented parts of Te Waipounamu. One special evening stands out—cooking a hearty steak meal in the back of the truck, situated at the base of towering peaks, brought a sense of warmth and togetherness that was deeply fulfilling.
Even in the stillness of the Haast Pass, I could feel the potential for life around me. The imagined symphony of bird songs echoed through my thoughts—tuis, along with the many other native birds, creating a chorus that resonates with New Zealand's spirit. This experience, enhanced by the beauty of our surroundings, continues to inspire my artwork, reflecting my love for both our whenua and its feathered inhabitants.
