Going for a Dive - Off The Deck
Acrylic on Canvas
915 x 610 x 40 mm $689.00nzd
Number 2 in my small series, Off the Deck, captures the essence of a New Zealand summer from the perspective of a batch. This piece embodies a true kiwiana spirit, filled with familiar elements that evoke warm memories of sun-soaked days. The deck chairs invite relaxation, while the scattered wetsuits hint at adventures in the surf. A boat rests in the background, and a guitar leans against the deck, suggesting a gathering of friends, laughter, and shared stories.
Within this scene, the surfboard stands prominent, adorned with the image of Taongaroa, the revered Atua and god of the sea. This depiction serves as a reminder for all who visit his shores to acknowledge the powerful influence he wields over the ocean. It encourages respect and gratitude for the rich bounty of kai moana—the seafood that sustains us. As the viewer delves deeper into the painting, they are encouraged to discover the hidden layers and symbols that celebrate our connection to the land and sea.
